What? In leadership studies, oftentimes a trait based approach has led us to connect certain characteristics and types of people with leadership. While leadership can look different across different individuals there are underlying biases behind who we view as leaders and the type of leadership that is valued. In an article by Scientific American, the authors found that top managers are oftentimes disproportionately white men [1]. Furthermore, a review by the New York Times found that only 20% of officials and executives in prominent positions identified as Black, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, multiracial or otherwise a person of color [2]. This underrepresentation is severe considering that these groups make up 40% of the U.S. population. To accurately reflect the population and the increasing diversity of the U.S. it will also be important to increase representation in leadership positions. So what?
